    11 hours ago by dennisthefoodie T U R N I P // There was SO much food (and yes, an unfortunate amount of styrofoam), I didn't have room to try this " #TurnipCake " ($7.95). Not the other kind of "turnip cake", but the flaky pastry one with strips of  #daikon  ( #chineseradish ) inside. I'm usually not crazy about this dish, so it was easy to draw the line here . So there's actually THREE places to get SJB at  #CrystalMall ! These are different from all the ones I tried during the SJB battle that I did a couple months ago. Most distinctive feature is the  #sesameseeds  embedded in the crispy bottoms! Soft, fluffy bao. These were takeout, so I'm not sure how much soup these contain if you eat it fresh, or how crispy these are, but overall flavour is good. Meat shrinks into a small ball, but there's enough meat juice

    1 day ago by dennisthefoodie S P A R E R I B S // A slightly different take on deep fried  #spareribs  from  #ShanghaiElan  ( #CrystalMall ,  #Burnaby ): "Spare Ribs w DF Spc" ($15.95) [just going by what's printed in the receipt ; good luck ordering it]. It's like typical salty dry fried ribs but with a garlicky pickled red chili twist to it.  #ribs   #yvr   #vancouver

    1 day ago by dennisthefoodie A B A L O N E // So yesterday was my dad's birthday party ( #famjam ), and while most of our food was Shanghainese takeout from Shanghai Elan at Crystal Mall (not bad for outside Richmond, dinner reservations are a must cuz it gets booked up, fyi), my mom was able to spend some time outside of helping take care of the grandsons to cook up a celebratory dish. Sliced  #Abalone  and big fat  #ChineseMushrooms  (with cooked lettuce underneath — yes, cooked lettuce...it's a Chinese thing).  #yvr   #vancouver

    1 day ago by dennisthefoodie F A N // Aunt's homemade rice cooker-full of  #StickyRice  ( #NoMiFan  aka  #NuoMiFan ) with  #ChineseSausage  ( #lapcheong ),  #ChineseBacon  ( #lapyuk ), and  #ChineseMushrooms  ( #DungGoo  aka  #DungGu  aka  #Shiitake ). "Rice" in Cantonese is "fan" (fahn) and I'm a fan .  #yvr   #vancouver   #famjam

I reflected upon how Chinese restaurant names and their obliviousness towards North American English standards and grammar have enriched our local restaurant lexicon.
