I was invited by epicmedia (Donnelly Group‘s PR company) to judge their 4th Annual Chicken Fight bourbon bbq wing competition: It was my first time doing anything like this. All the judges got free wings and beer, so why not? Kitsilano area restaurants were invited to participate, and each team got 20 lbs of wings … Continue reading Chicken Fight IV: Bourbon BBQ Wing Competition at The Bimini Pub in Kitsilano

This little adventure down the foodie-friendly “green brick road” will expand your mind and palate at the same time. Somehow I stumbled onto this group called Luz Kitchen (pronounced “looz”) who are a group of cooks and chefs who put on Filipino-themed pop-ups, doing a modern take on Filipino cuisine. I haven’t had a ton of experience with Filipino cuisine, but I see it becoming a larger part of the landscape here. Take the area around … Continue reading Flipping Out Over Filipino Food at Akulturado: A Modern Filipino Pop-up Series
As you might know, I wear my love for Longtail Kitchen on my sleeve. It’s the more casual and affordable version of Maenam (who still have an awful Flash-based website). I was less enthralled with Fat Mao, their other restaurant. But on December 1, after several months of gestation, Angus & Co. opened up Freebird … Continue reading First Look: Juicy, Delicately-Seasoned Rotisserie Chicken at Freebird Chicken Shack in New West

(You can read my review of … Continue reading Flirting with Danger: Thai Sour Cured Pork Ribs with Brett Beer
A relatively light day, but no less satisfying: Highland Park Brewery / The Hermosillo (Highland Park) Ruen Pair (Thaitown)
In the previous two days of our trip, I was dazzled by the variety of beers available. I was at times paralyzed by choice! A good problem to have, I guess. Today, we scaled it back a bit. Places visited: Golden Road Brewing (Glendale) Night + Market Song (Silverlake)

Aree Thai on Kingsway has been around since at least 2010. I got some really good takeout from them about 4 years ago and was impressed enough to bring a whole group to try dinner. Unfortunately that dinner experience kinda sucked…small portions, slow service, underwhelming flavours. We didn’t go back…until now. We quite enjoyed it!
