Flavourful Vegetarian Things at Do Chay on Kingsway

July 19, 2019 dennis Leave a comment

The day after this meal, I had one of the biggest, easiest dumps in my life. Plenty of delicious fibre to be had at đồ chay (website - Instagram). Here’s what happened leading up to that precious moment.

I won't go into details but we discussed food (of course) but mostly talked about mental health, depression, work, family, and struggles. It was great to finally sit down with Ronsar after being acquaintances and IG friends and now real life friends. His home cooking is legendary, and there's nothing he won't try (his latest ordeal was cassoulet!). We did the 9-course omakase for $60/person

Have you tried the  #DetroitRedTop   #pizza  at  @ajsbklynpizzajoint  yet? It's surprisingly light for the thickness. Cheese on the bottom, sauce ladled on top afterwards, and has incredible crunchy, lacy, crispy cheese edges. Reheats great at home too. You should see me in a crown.  #ajsbrooklynpizzajoint   #detroitstylepizza   #yvr   #vancouver   #crispycheese
  • 6 days ago by dennisthefoodie L E V E L U P // Made  #shinramyunpopcorn  again, this time incorporating the dehydrated veg packet (which also contains little chunks of textured soy protein, standing in for meat). I ground it up in the spice grinder. Worked great. It's a fuller  #ShinRamyun  flavour with notes of green onion, shiitake mushroom, and yes, plenty of heat .  #popcorn   #yvr   #vancouver   #msg  // Credit for this idea goes to  @nongbu_korean  in Edmonton!
  • 6 days ago by dennisthefoodie T H A N K S F A M // Family really pulled together to create a great  #Thanksgiving  dinner. Aunt made a juicy  #turkey  ( #freshturkey , not frozen!) and excellent stuffing. Sister made roasted  #brusselsprouts  with  #bacon  and TWO pies (pumpkin and "Shoo-Fly" made with molasses). Other sister made smooth  #mashedpotatoes . Gravy made by the fine folks at Club House . It works. Mom made stuffed mushroom caps and baked miso eggplant. I dusted off the Wii for family karaoke. Grandma (RIP) got to eat too. I always feel a bit melancholy after these events. But the kids and dogs
  • 1 week ago by dennisthefoodie C O M E D Y O F T E R R O R S // So proud of Wicca and her first ever stand-up comedy performance with her  #StandUpForMentalHealth  class. Comedian David Granirer has been offering this class for the past 15 years, helping people with mental health issues learn stand-up comedy as a way to deal with their issues and to do something most of us would shit our pants over — perform in front of a group and make them laugh. All the work Wicca did in the past three months paid off with a tight, punchy,
  • 1 week ago by dennisthefoodie P O R K B E L L Y // My favourite dish today at Szechuan Cuisine on Kingsway in Burnaby. Pan Fried  #PorkBelly  with Green Pepper ($15.99). Simple, direct, done well. I found most of the dishes here today to be quite uhh salt-forward, but still just within my personal range of salt tolerance. We ordered everything "spicy" (there's a checkbox on the laminated menus), but everything was a medium at most. But still a good thing cuz we could taste everything else and not be blown away by just heat. This was similar to my first solo visit
  • 1 week ago by dennisthefoodie S I C H U A N // Even though I'm Chinese (Cantonese, Canadian-born), I don't eat real  #Szechuan  ( #Sichuan ) food that often. We never ate it growing up. It wasn't even available, and especially not in Surrey in the 80s. Even when we moved to Vancouver, we ate mostly Cantonese and a fair amount of Shanghainese if we went out. So even now, Sichuan is underexplored for me. Wicca hates it, and considers it too oily and one-note. But the better renditions of Sichuan dishes I have tried I've enjoyed. And I am addicted to the  #mala  flavour (numbing
  • 1 week ago by dennisthefoodie M E N T A L // If you were wondering how Wicca's doing, she's been pretty good these past few months. Not many emotional breakdowns or rough patches. She's actually been taking a "Stand Up for Mental Health" stand-up comedy class for people dealing with mental health issues. The class started a few months ago and their first real performace is this Saturday Oct 12, 2019 at La Fontana Caffe at 7:30pm. It's real rough and raw. These people are not professionals AT ALL. The class is part therapy, part instructional. This initial performace is like a mid-term exam.
