Solid. Not exceptional but good enough. Lots of staff and responsive service. Huge menu. Faint smell of gas/butane in the air. Not “this restaurant’s gonna blow” level of smell, but “you gotta get that checked out” kind of smell. Read on for the deets on this quick little dinner!

Quick little post about a weekend lunch. No big revelations, just good funky Korean food with guts!
We had actually wanted to try out VanSoba but we got there at 12:50pm and they were already sold out of their handmade soba in little over an hour!! Their posted hours are 11:30am – 4:00pm, so that was a bit of a disappointment. 🙁 Ah well, next time. (See Kinome review for a taste of handmade soba.)
We googled for something else to eat and came up with South Castle Korean Restaurant on 2nd St. near Lonsdale Ave. in North Vancouver. We’ve actually been to the South Castle location in Coquitlam way back in 2012. Turns out this North Van location is the “original” and that they licensed the name for the independently-owned Coquitlam location. Menus are slightly different between these two locations, but both locations sell Korean sausage that is actually stuffed intestine. Food with guts!

Damso Modern Korean Cuisine on Bute near Robson started this “All-You-Can-Eat Korean Fried Chicken Wings Happy Hour Special” back in mid-July but I only noticed the sign for it this week. I took on the challenge… Last time I was here, I had some so-so Korean-style ramen and haven’t been back since. But it’s so close to my work and I think I can eat $11 worth of wings in one sitting! So I winged it.

Continue reading LA Day 8 – A Brunch Surprise, A Tale of Two Breweries, and A Taste of Koreatown
It was a massive 10-day vacation in Los Angeles around Easter long weekend where we visited ~32 food/beer places. We brought Wicca’s mom there for the annual Qingming Festival (Ching Ming aka Tomb-Sweeping Day) because Wicca’s maternal grandparents are interred in one of the Chinese cemeteries there. We also did a whole lot on our own, so let’s jump into it!

Reviews have been middling for the newish Bute St. location of Damso, but it’s close to work and their banners have been screaming out at me about KOREAN BBQ TACOS, OSSO BUCO and SPICY SEOUL RAMEN! So with an open heart and an empty stomach, I took a chance and tried their “ramen”.
I saw this place across the street from Campagnolo and thought, “Middle-eastern kebab burgers?!” After closer inspection and some googling I realized it was Korean rice burgers, and nothing to do with kebabs. Continue reading Korean Rice Burgers at Kobob Burger on Main St.
