Smooth ‘n Chewy Lanzhou Beef Noodles at Chi Men on Denman

Chi Men on Denman opened up in late July 2017 in the former Chelicious space, and has been quietly ladling out some really good soup noodles to a barely appreciative West End audience. It hasn’t been busy in there, but they deserve to be. With 3 Quarters Full Taiwanese Cafe (located in Denman Place Mall) still around after a full year in business, looks like the West End might just have the right clientelle to keep these kinds of Asian restaurants in business. Maybe. Winter is coming.

#EatTheWall: Mexican Tortas at Molli Cafe

For the next while, I will endeavour to eat all the cuisines whose race/culture that the Orange One has insulted or referenced over the past year:

  • Mexican
  • Punjabi (Indian/Pakistani)
  • Muslim
  • Chinese
  • African-American
  • Ukrainian
  • Jewish

I had some Southern fried chicken at Big Al’s pop-up at The Lion’s Den Cafe recently, so that takes care of African-American for now. I think if I eat at Efendi Uyghur on Kingsway (Globe & Mail review here), that’ll take care of both Muslim and Chinese 😀

For today, I re-visited Molli Cafe to try out their tortas. I tried their tacos before (pretty good) but my torta itch was only lightly scratched with the tortas from TK Sub Cafe so I was hoping Molli Cafe would do a better, more satisfying job.

In short: my stomach was VERY satisfied but the itch for tortas still remains.

Celebrating 5 Years of Pork: Swinefest 2015 at Hog Shack in Steveston

Hog Shack just celebrated it’s 5th anniversary on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015 with Swinefest, a “competition-style” barbecue buffet that included a glass of Driftwood’s fresh hop Sartori Harvest for only $35! It was a sweet deal that probably flew under a lot of people’s radar, but it sold out well ahead of time anyways. We were there to celebrate and indulge, so here’s the recap. Enjoy!

33 Acres x Juno Kim: Monday Night Dinner Series (Episode 2)

Vancouver Instagram-famous chef to the design community Juno Kim (@jun0k) has started a “Monday Night Dinner Series” at 33 Acres Brewing. My interest was piqued with last week’s premier dinner that featured Wild Mushroom Risotto and Pork Belly:

The menu is different every week. Not sure how long they’re gonna do this for, but follow @33acresbrewing or @jun0k for the latest news.

Note: This is “episode 2” cuz I missed the first “episode” 😛 Unfortunately no re-runs so you gotta experience it live!

Dirty Burger Double Patty Date Night at Upstairs at Campagnolo

It’s been way too long since my last dirty burger from Upstairs at Campagnolo. The dark, cozy, friendly, casual vibe is perfect for a dirty ‘n delicious date night with Wicca.

Note about the photos: it’s super-dark in there. I tried to do the best I could with the photos! Hope it still gives you a good sense of the food.

Street Food Quickie: Bacon Cheeseburger at The Local Omnivore

I LOVE a good burger. So much so that I don’t want eat them more than once every month or two for fear that I’ll get tired of them! So when I DO actually eat a burger, I want it to be DAMN GOOD. Enter the newest food truck to hit Vancouver, The Local Omnivore.

Missing the Mark: Postmark Brewing (Plus Make-Up Sex at Main Street Brewing & Brassneck)

Too bad…I was really looking forward to the opening of Postmark Brewing. Their beers aren’t terrible but they don’t stand out either, which in this increasingly crowded craft beer market in Vancouver just doesn’t cut it. I made up for the lackluster experience by dropping by Main Street Brewing and Brassneck afterwards 😉 Continue reading Missing the Mark: Postmark Brewing (Plus Make-Up Sex at Main Street Brewing & Brassneck)

Ping Pong Rave Food: Full Blast Summer Jam by Here There

There’s this new class of food events that reminds me of those 90s warehouse rave days. Hawkers Market is a bit like that (previous Hawkers Market events here, here and here) but I went to another similar one-time-only event that was even more “underground” in that it was held in a secret location that wasn’t revealed until the night before. The event was FULL BLAST SUMMER JAM produced by Here There, who have put on a couple interesting food-related events previously, including one where they turned a school cafeteria into a pop-up restaurant. I had even more fun at Full Blast than Hawkers Market! 😛 Even though there was only ONE food vendor and the beer was crap, the food was so good that it didn’t matter!
