I first heard about the Twice on Sundays ramen pop-up through Vancouver is Awesome via a drinking buddy. Then I heard about it again through another beer geek and then I thought I gotta check it out!

The much-anticipated Steel & Oak Brewing Co. is finally open in New West. They had good buzz at VCBW (which I missed) so I was looking forward to trying out their beers!

Amazing first release, and the name "Foreward" suggests that this is gonna be a big, thick book, the pages of which are just waiting to be written. A book to be sipped and savoured slowly, no snacks required. Love the smaller 500ml capped bottle format. Also, they  #putabirdonit  .     16 hours ago by dennisthefoodie T H E D O N // Homemade  #ChirashiDon  with  #YellowfinTuna  ( #AhiTuna ), local  #Uni  ( #seaurchin ),  #NovaScotia   #Scallops , and a hidden layer of soy-cured  #Ikura  under the  #rice . Eaten with soy ponzu (not pictured) and Four Winds Velo pale ale with lemon. The uni tastes so smooth 'n creamy right now. Just a hint of funk at the end, well within my personal limits . Everything from  @freshideasstarthere . It's like an intense passionfruit & mango smoothie in  #beer  form! Thankfully not cloying. Super drinkable and the bottle was only a month old so still tasted fresh 'n fine. I didn't get much vanilla in this one, but no biggie. Lactose and apple pectin in this one, for sweetness and thick mouthfeel. Mmmmm.  #craftbeer   #bellwoodsbeer   #yvr   #vancouver   #ipa

They use a  #glutenfree  coating that for once is good! So not like the crunchy cardboard that I've experienced with other GF fried chicken, this stuff's actually light and crispy, so good job. Reheats well (as with most fried chicken ). They sell 10 pieces chicken-only for $25 and that seems mighty tempting.  #friedchicken   #freebirdckn   #freebirdchicken   #yvr   #newwest

Quarter  #Rotisserie  Dry Aged  #BromeLakeDuck  ($15) with nuoc cham marinated  #beets ,  #chickenrice , and crispy  #friedshallots . Side of  #chickenbroth . Could be my imagination, but there was a vaguely Chinese 5-spice flavour to the duck. Really tasty and tender. The beets thankfully didn't taste like salty fish sauce . They were almost like picked beets. Glad I swung by  #rivermrkt . It's been a while. I also got some Turmeric Fried Chicken to go.  #freebirdchicken   #freebirdckn   #newwest   #yvr

Strangely reminds me of one of their other beers, Day Blink even though there's no Simcoe hops. It's entirely Aussie hops (Galaxy, Vic Secret, Enigma) so it's extreme tropical fruity hops with a piney/grassy quality. Screams out for salty snacks. Rold Gold pretzels would be so good right now. I can't believe it's been a year since Twin Sails started the semi-weekly can release assaults. The  #twinsailsbeer  tasting room was "hopping". Nice to finally meet…

Review of the new  @bellsandwhistlesyvr  now posted to the blog, with bonus Zwanze Day recap.  #bellsandwhistlesyvr  does a hell of a lot more things right than wrong, without any bells and whistles, despite their name.     6 days ago by dennisthefoodie C E N D O L //  #Indonesian   #cendol   #dessert  with a Vietnamese touch. (In Vietnamese this is called  #CheBanhLot .) "Cendol" in Indonesian means "bulge" cuz I guess those green wormy things bulge? Wicca made them using  #pandan  extract, mung bean flour, and a bit of cornstarch. It's almost like making German spaetzle. The dark stuff is Indonesian  #palmsugar  that has an almost coffee-like flavour. The white stuff is  #coconutmilk .
