Fried Chicken Sin at Craft Beer Market

November 24, 2013 dennis Leave a comment

DSCF4333

Finally tried the new Craft Beer Market in Olympic Village, near Tap & Barrel and Legacy Liquor Store. They have another location in Calgary and a new one opening up in Edmonton. I have an unexplained obsession with chicken and waffles so I ordered that. Continue reading Fried Chicken Sin at Craft Beer Market →

Broken Rice Vietnamese

DSCF3880

Broken Rice specializes in broken rice dishes. It’s a Viet thing, they smash uncooked rice grains until they’re broken then cook them as usual, creating this interesting rice texture. This place is run by the same people that own Green Lemongrass on Kingsway! Continue reading Broken Rice Vietnamese →

I went to Hawkers Market again. Will there be more people dancing this time? (Rant and ramen burgers at a previous visit here.) Continue reading Hawkers Market - Nov 9 2013 →

33 mins ago by dennisthefoodie The  #protein  centerpiece of the Family Meal Set A from  #MrRedCafe : Caramelized  #VuDai   #Fish  in  #Claypot  ( #ClaypotFish  aka  #CaKhoLangVuDai ). On this occasion, they used wild  #salmon  and cooked it for 7 hours, creating an absolutely delicious and authentic Vietnamese stewed fish dish where you can also eat the bones, much like canned fish but in the best possible way. This is the village food of northern Vietnam, the food of people surviving on whatever their surroundings provided. Different from the southern style of caramelized catfish...less intensely sweet and black peppery. A dish made to eat with lots of rice and…

60 mins ago by dennisthefoodie  #Vietnamese-style   #GreenPapayaSalad , part of the Sunday-only Family Meal Set A at  #MrRedCafe  on West Broadway. Gentler than Thai-style green papaya salad cuz it's less spicy and sour, and a little more sweet. Love the  #beefjerky  that's traditionally part of it, along with the usual Vietnamese herbs ( #cilantro ,  #mint ) and  #friedshallots . We loved the finely shaved  #greenpapaya . Shaved finer than we've seen before. Technically a  #sponsoredpost . ***Oops, I don't mean to suggest that you *can't* get the papaya salad outside of Sunday...you absolutely can. But this full Set Meal is only available on Sundays. Make sense? I hope so...***

1 hour ago by dennisthefoodie The  #NorthernVietnamese   #FamilyMeal  at the new  #MrRedCafe  on West Broadway. Only available on Sundays. We checked out the new westside location of Mr. Red Cafe as a guest of the adorable owner Rose (we did not pay, but we left a generous tip), so technically this is a  #sponsoredpost  but you know that I'm not simply a PR puppet or an industry mouthpiece, so you will still get our honest intimate thoughts and feelings about the whole experience. . This is the Sunday-only Family Meal Set A ($37.50 which feeds two) that comes with Vietnamese Green Papaya Salad (shown in…

7 hours ago by dennisthefoodie The best Chinese  #EggTarts  ( #DanTat ) in the city are from  #MaruiBakery  near London Drugs and Wang's Shanghai on Kingsway near Joyce. Jiggly, quivering egg custard that's so light and heavenly, nestled in the flakiest, multi-layered pastry. Thanks  @mistermagicman  for being so generous!  #chinesebakery

8 hours ago by dennisthefoodie This is a total kid's hangout. I was into this 20 years ago, and even then I wasn't that thrilled with  #shavedice . But I respect women's wishes! Too bad there isn't a combination  #craftbeer  bar and shaved ice place...  #IcepikShavery

8 hours ago by dennisthefoodie This  #BeefRoll  (Pan Fried Marinated Beef Wraps - $6.50) at  #Dinesty  had no sauce. It's so much better with (hoisin) sauce, so I dunno why they did it like this. Just ok. Doesn't measure up to the best ones where the pancake is soft, fresh, crispy, and contains adequate beef and hoisin sauce.  #beefwrap

12 hours ago by dennisthefoodie Camphor &  #TeaSmoked   #Duck  ($17.95). Good if you got a meaty piece, but most were mangy. Taste of the actual meat was good though...pleasant level of smoke, somewhat moist, not too salty. The  #bao  were soft 'n fluffy but felt like something was missing when eating the duck and bao together. I mopped up the sauce from the pork chop & rice cake dish with my bao.  #Dinesty   #zhangcha   #zhangchaduck

12 hours ago by dennisthefoodie I had to eat three of these  #xiaolongbao  just to make sure I wasn't going crazy, cuz these were quite disappointing. Minimal soup, not served hot enough, no aromatics. I never thought I was an XLB fanatic like some people, but I guess I am now if these didn't measure up. Consistency between  #Dinesty  locations seems to be an issue because the ones I've seen on Robson are bigger and plumper.
