Great Ramen, Bad Gyoza at Yah Yah Ya Ramen on Robson

January 23, 2017 dennis 3 Comments

The downtown location of Yah Yah Ya Ramen on Robson St. (same block as Korean supermarket H-Mart) opened up late November 2016. I tried it today and was pleasantly surprised at how good my bowl was. The gyoza, however, was not so good.

This one uses  #PortersPerfection   #apples , which the beautifully-designed label says are known for being oddly-shaped. Sounds "ugly beautiful" to me! Swipe for my reactions to tasting this beauty. Inquisitive mixed with confusion, ending with outright adoration. This  #craftcider  only uses one kind of apple but it takes me on a journey. Super crisp and acidic. Acidity is about there [raises hand to x level]. Astringency there [lowers hand a bit]. Dryness about there [lowers

They're marinated in yakitori sauce. The coating appears to be  #riceflour , sauced with "rice malt" (brown rice syrup? They describe it as "umami extract") and seven kinds of spices. Luckily they taste good. On the sweet side, and the saucy yet crispy coating reminds me of good Korean fried chicken. Comes with cold cabbage & carrot as a cleanser, as well as a wet wipe. I do wish the

They call it the  #Umami   #ShoyuRamen  ($11.50). Comes with  #radishsprouts ,  #shreddedleeks ,  #chickenbreast , one piece of  #chashu , and half an  #egg . The firm, chewy, curly, bright yellow noodles are apparently made somewhere in Vancouver with whole grains. The  #chicken  is tender and probably cooked  #sousvide . The  #porkbelly  chashu is on the firm, chewy side, with its connective tissues stretching and snapping like elastics under your bite. I do like how they torched top of

It's like Alibi Room 2.0 with a stellar list of 28 taps of local  #craftbeer , cocktails, a couple well-chosen wines,  @dickiesginger , and a perfectly-sized food menu (and Nigel's distinctive handwriting on the wall). You'll recognize a lot of the staff.

I didn't not eat much, but I enjoyed this creative carb-on-carb  #sandwich  called "Same Same But Different" by  @longtailkitchen , paired with a great Thai Tea Brett Saison by  @steelandoak  (not shown). Spicy pad mee korat noodles inside of a thin, crispy roti prata! I only tried a couple more beers, including a great beer/beer cocktail by  @superfluxbeer  called "Easymaitaiger" (Easy Tiger with rum, lime, and orgeat syrup), which won Best Beer.

Brisket like this is such a rare thing to find here — all wood-smoked, slow and low, babied throughout the night so that we, the greedy horde, can enjoy the fuck out of it. Ribs were good too, although a touch over and almost falling off the bone (I prefer a bit
