Longtable Dinner at Longtail Kitchen: Authentic Malaysian Cuisine by Alex Chen

March 2, 2014 dennis Leave a comment

I know we go on and on about Longtail Kitchen (facebook) in New West. They do longtable pop-up dinners featuring different chefs on a semi-regular basis. This was the first one we’ve been to. We really enjoyed it! Continue reading Longtable Dinner at Longtail Kitchen: Authentic Malaysian Cuisine by Alex Chen →

I grew up eating this stuff, so when I’m feeling not-so-good, it’s so comforting to eat a hot bowl of congee (AKA jook). A childhood taste that helps ease my adult pain 😀 Continue reading Hangover Cures Part 1: Congee →

Brunch at Farmer’s Apprentice

February 1, 2014 dennis Leave a comment

Holy crap! Farmer’s Apprentice just won a bunch of 2014 Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards. Well deserved…although looks like our plans to try dinner are gonna be a lot harder :/

Spur-of-the-moment decision to have brunch at Farmer’s Apprentice, a place that I’ve been wanting to try for a while. Continue reading Brunch at Farmer’s Apprentice →

Finally had a chance to try out Tuc Craft Kitchen (facebook) in Gastown. What attracted me were their “Nibbles & Bites” like Pork Belly Crackling and tempura-battered Crispy Bacon & Egg. Perfect bar snacks. Continue reading My Version of Going to a Cafe: Brunch at Tuc Craft Kitchen →

We tried Charlie’s Little Italian the other week and saw Burdock & Co. (facebook) down the street where Cafeteria used to be and made a mental note to check this place out. The opportunity came so we went for brunch. Great stuff! Continue reading Brunch at Burdock & Co. →

Broken Rice Vietnamese

Broken Rice specializes in broken rice dishes. It’s a Viet thing, they smash uncooked rice grains until they’re broken then cook them as usual, creating this interesting rice texture. This place is run by the same people that own Green Lemongrass on Kingsway! Continue reading Broken Rice Vietnamese →

B E L L Y F U L L // No secret, I eat goooood. But it takes effort and motivation (on Wicca's part, usually ) and I'm a very lucky person. She made this wicked  #JamaicanOxtail  Stew last month with  #butterbeans  (my fave),  #riceandpeas , and  #callaloo  with butter . She based it on the African Bites recipe if you wanna tackle it.  #jamaicanoxtailstew   #oxtailstew   #oxtail   #homecooking   #yvr   #vancouver

  • G O I N G G R E E N // A few weeks ago, Wicca made a very successful coconut curry #laksa. She did it again this past weekend but did a "green" version (based on a new @adamliaw recipe) that uses fresh green chilies (jalapeno & serrano) and Korean long green peppers instead of dried red peppers. It kinda tastes like a mild Thai green curry version of laksa, with its fresher "green" flavour. She also experimented with using Japanese ramen noodles instead of Hokkien egg noodles or oil noodles. We still included thin rice vermicelli though cuz

T W O S I Z E S F I T S A L L // Cool that  @rkicoffeelab  offers either 6 or 10oz  #pourovers  — I don't recall any other places giving me a choice.  #rkicoffeelab  came highly recommended by a few people and I love it. I had a wonderful and interesting Colombian Bourbon  #pourover  and it helped me figure out that I like fun, expressive beans that aren't necessarily acidic as they are extroverted with their flavours. This bean was described as having: lavender, passionfruit, mango smoothie, "ome" juice (ume?), oolong tea, and tangerine. I seriously considered

M A S T E R O F Y O U R D O M A I N // Another take on  #ricerolls  at  @masterriceroll . This is kinda sorta old school HK-style  #riceroll  that I'm more familiar with — thicker sheets of freshly steamed rice noodle, fillings completely wrapped inside, presented as one big roll (sometimes two if you're in a dim sum restaurant), rather than multiple rolls like at Hei Hei (or Vietnamese-style banh cuon). It's all good, just different styles . This Marinated  #Beef  rice roll ($9.25) also came with cooked  #iceberglettuce  inside a nostalgic taste for me

D O U B L E H A P P I N E S S // If you get a  #riceroll  & congee combo from  @heiheiriceroll , it'll be DOUBLE STARCH as well as double happiness 囍! But I stuck with just the minimalist classic Minced  #Beef  Rice Roll ($7.50) for my first visit to this very popular and very very busy specialty rice roll stall in  #RichmondPublicMarket  (aka RPM). RPM and other food courts like it are basically the closest thing we have to hawker centres in Canada. Most stalls try to do too much IMHO but occasionally you come

L A K S A // There's quite a few types of  #laksa  but Wicca did her own take on a coconut curry-based chicken & shrimp laksa. It took about 10 hours over two days to make it from scratch , including a custom shrimp shell & chicken broth and pounding her own " #rempah " or spice paste. If you're interested in engaging in a Herculean effort, you can look up the laksa recipe and video by Adam Liaw (MasterChef Australia, Destination Flavour). Wicca used that as a general guide. Adding two types of noodles makes for the best experience, even

P R O M I S I N G // A promising new  #Vietnamese  restaurant has opened up on Kingsway near Highgate where Queen’s Cafe by Eighteen Chefs and 86° Wonderful House used to be.  @bdvietcuisine  is showing strong potential in the couple months that it's been open. If they keep up the focus on quality and service, and don't try to do too much, I think it'll be one of the best Vietnamese restaurants to come out of the pandemic era. They survived Wicca's intense interrogation about the menu and desserts, so that means a lot . Recommended dishes
