Chicken Fight IV: Bourbon BBQ Wing Competition at The Bimini Pub in Kitsilano

I was invited by epicmedia (Donnelly Group‘s PR company) to judge their 4th Annual Chicken Fight bourbon bbq wing competition:

It was my first time doing anything like this. All the judges got free wings and beer, so why not?

Kitsilano area restaurants were invited to participate, and each team got 20 lbs of wings and a bottle of Jim Beam Apple Bourbon to use in their recipe. This year’s teams:

  • The Kitchen Table
  • Pat’s Place (actually just Pat the bartender at The Bimini)
  • Charqui
  • The Bimini
  • Romer’s Burger Bar
  • Bimini Beer Club (a social beer club at The Bimini)

Unfortunately, lots of other restaurants backed out this year, including Au Comptoir and Fable 🙁 booooooo!

First Look: Juicy, Delicately-Seasoned Rotisserie Chicken at Freebird Chicken Shack in New West

As you might know, I wear my love for Longtail Kitchen on my sleeve. It’s the more casual and affordable version of Maenam (who still have an awful Flash-based website). I was less enthralled with Fat Mao, their other restaurant. But on December 1, after several months of gestation, Angus & Co. opened up Freebird Chicken Shack at River Market in New West. It’s the same mini-Granville Island market that houses Longtail Kitchen and Re-Up BBQ. With a tight, focused menu, does Freebird bring my dreams of hawker stall-style eating to the Lower Mainland?
